D.I.E.T. (Determination, Insanity, Enthusiasm, Trust): PART 1

Well, I was supposed to share some sort of camping experiences actually... but a blogger friend of mine requested for some tips on a vegetarian diet, so tadah... here it is! In fact, that blogger blogged about menus for people who are on a diet. For the post, please click here!

Besides, it is easier to type out stuffs about my daily life. (Thanks to laziness-a typical characteristic in a
Libran... :P )

Here are the pictures of what I eat during my college days. Of course, the lunches are BY NO MEANS SMALL. As you can see, they are quite large. Why did I manage to lose 4kg then, if I am on giant lunches?

A heap of veggies, tempeh, rice
 photo DSC_0364_zpsf843595f.jpg
Rice (Carbs), Tempeh (Protein source-tempeh is often deep-fried), pumpkins, veggies! YUM!

SAUCE OVERLOAD... zzz (Bad idea for diet... I only learnt about the necessity of draining sauces from food  recently.

As you can see, the lunch boxes are nowhere small. LOL
(No before and after pictures, sorry. I always cover up under loose clothes. It is embarrassing to show off my figure under skin-tight clothes and I am not used to wearing such attire too.)

The solution: going vegetarian and choose the TYPES of food wisely.

PART 1: When Angel meets Devil
Okay, so now I will first reveal the "Angel" foods and "Devil" foods. What are "Angel" and "Devil" foods?

"Angel" foods are foods that are good for your health and even aid slimming. Example:

  • Rice: Brown rice,  Unflavoured/less-salt porridge
  • Fruits and vegetables: Practically all fruits and vegetables; advisable to eat a variety of them from the colour spectrum.
  • Nuts/Legumes: They are packed in protein and essential fatty acids, depending on the nuts. Still, eat them in moderation. Deep-frying them or coating them with sugary substances as sweets and you will get a high-calorie snack which is definitely undesirable.
  • Drinks: Oatmeal, Sky juice, Cereal drinks (watch out for the sodium and sugar content though), Clear tea, black coffee (drink in moderation)
  • Confectionery: Plain biscuits, whole meal bread
  • Soups: Clear vegetable/lentil soup
  • Desserts: Fruits
  • Negative-calorie foods: food that, when consumed, take up more calories than the calories the food has, e.g. lettuce, carrots, celery

"Devil" foods are foods that can make your diet go haywire. They are normally nice and tasty but lack nutritional value. Example:

  • Processed meat: High in sodium and saturated fats. As a vegetarian, I definitely do not consume these.
  • Faux meat: Seitan, Crispy Vegan Chicken, Vegan cods, etc. Sure they are tasty but they are outrageously high in sodium and flavourings. Plus, they are calorie-dense too. Get ready to give up ALL forms of meat (including faux meat) if you want to go vegetarian healthily.
  • Rice: Polished rice
  • Fruits and vegetables: Vegetables tempura, pickles. Fruits and veggies, when treated with complex procedures or under high temperature, they will lose their nutritional value.
  • Drinks: Carbonated drinks, Teh tarik, sweetened teas and coffees, packaged drinks, bottled fruit juices
  • Confectionery: Doughnuts, Pies, Croissants, Danish pastries, white bread, sweet biscuits, cakes...
  • Soups: Creamy soup. Creamy stuffs are packed with tons of fat and calories, since they are made of milk, cheese, sour cream, etc.
  • Desserts: Your typical Malaysian iced desserts, ice-cream, mousse, cheesecake... (The list of bad desserts is ENDLESS!!!)
  • Other foods: Deep-fried food, fast food, roasted food, barbecued food, creamy food, your "goreng-goreng" and "lemak-lemak" food... YUM!

Of course, that does not mean that you cannot consume the "Devil" foods at all when dieting! Yes you can eat them, provided that they are consumed sparingly (and I mean, SPARINGLY! In my case, I have a cendol every month or less. )

Why are the foods bad or good? Well that is a story so long that anyone can write a book out of it. To understand foods more, I recommend you to do further readings about them, ha ha ha.

PART 2: Make Diet as Part of LIFE.
Know why do you want to take up a diet, e.g. for weight loss, for religious reasons, etc.

  • In my case, I want to lose weight to enable me to lead an active lifestyle, besides being as a means to reduce my risk for diseases (Ugh!) and to fit into my favourite clothes.
  • Meanwhile, I abhor the thought that animals are brutally tortured for food, from their breeding conditions to the process of slaughtering. Human torture has NO difference with animal torture, e.g. concentration camp versus packed chicken coops, baby farm versus artificial insemination of cows for milk production, etc. Besides, just like us, animals need love and care.
  • I do not go vegan for practical reasons; I decide to go vegan when I begin working and can prepare my own food.

Integrate diet into your lifestyle instead of viewing diet as a chore. Let me tell you, unless you are training as an athlete or being super-obese (where medical supervision is necessary for a rapid weight-loss), you can actually slim down by tweaking your lifestyle bit-by-bit!

This is how I do my assignments and surf the Net at home, he he. My innocent computer table is now my stand-and-sit desk! Note the stepper? (P/S: Ignore my messy table.)
To survive No-Cook Days (e.g. Studying in IPG, where cooking is forbidden.)
1. Make special requests in your meals.

  • I request for NO SUGAR in my coffee when I have meals in the campus cafeteria. If I do not make any request, I might end up with half a cup of WHITE sugar and a mere half cup of coffee. Even with the less-sugar version, I can still find a substantial quarter-cup of sugar in my beverage. Thus, practically I AM DRINKING COFFEE SYRUP if I do not make requests! Drinks are best tasted in their original form.
  • I also request for added vegetables in my meals to increase nutritional content.
  • When buying nasi campur, I request the auntie to halve my rice amount. One bowl of rice is, well, huge. I do not know how heavy the rice is but the sight of a hill of rice frightens me! Click Here to know the calorific value of rice. Besides consuming less starch, I can put in more veggies too.

2. When buying nasi campur or economy rice, choose stir-fried stuffs with less seasoning over deep-fried, oily stuffs. Count yourself lucky if you can find steamed meals. As for the main course, go for white instead of "nasi goreng" or "mee goreng" or anything that is "goreng"ed. I mentioned white because white rice has less calories and fat than the "goreng"ed stuffs even though it is nutritionally devoid.

3. Eat slowly, at least 20 bites per mouthful. In this way, you will feel full because it takes 20 minutes for the brain to signal us that the body is full.

4. Watch your portions and calorie intake.

5. Opt for high-volume, low-calorie foods. For instance, when snacking, I will go for an orange instead of a Rice Krispies bar even though both foods are 50+ calories. Orange is packed with Vitamin C while Rice Krispies is mostly made up of fats and sugar, besides being less as filling as well.

6. Go for healthy snacks, such as nuts, fruits and baby carrots. Baby carrots are my favourite snack since they are negative-calorie foods. A serving (85g) of carrots contains merely 27 calories, and munching them is a great exercise for the teeth!

7. Keep a food diary to keep track of the food consumption. However, do not consume fewer calories than your basal metabolic rate or your body will switch to starvation mode which cause you to store more fat.

At home, you can prepare your meals as you have the cooking utensils and the refrigerator, so how diet-friendly your meals are depends on YOU. I recommend such methods of cooking:

  • Steaming (not for mushrooms though, they make your body cold)
  • Blanching (vegetables)
  • Light stir-frying of vegetables in minimal oil and salt, within a short time. These are good for food rich in fat-soluble vitamins, e.g. carrots, tomatoes, Brussels sprouts.
Well, I have to pen off for homework. See you soon and stay-tuned for more information! :)

Feel free to leave your comments for queries.

Time To Study and I Feel Like... HOW?! (Part 11)

"30 marks in History! Oh no!"

It was after that, you start to view History as a disgusting subject which has marred your examination result slip, all the time. You begin hibernating during History class, spitting onto History books, casting any homework related to History aside, and come examinations, you did another last-minute rush to chomp in those History notes so that you can somehow scribble some facts out and earn a few points.

You FAIL again. You sink into another round of depression. And it comes round and round.

A vicious cycle, which eventually haunts your life as a student.

And you FEAR that. You DREAD that. You are trying every means to shun from that.

No worries! Let me share with you some how-tos on tackling Reading subjects!

As usual, prep your notes and mind maps before lessons. Pay attention to the teachers.

#You are very redundant, Sharon.

Back home, hurry up every single homework related to your reading subjects at the speed of lightning. While completing your assignments related to such subjects, PLEASE READ YOUR TEXT AGAIN prior to your homework marathon. Yes, I was a high school student. I was always more than just being stupefied when my History teacher handed out worksheet after worksheet during his class. Those at the front row will get the papers from him and handed them to us just as how the farmers rear chicks. I mean the real, genuine chicks with feather. Not hot chicks, okay?

I mean THIS.

Paper after paper, and as we got the stapler ready to bind them up, the teacher put us to a halt.

"SABARLAH, ADA LAGI!!!"

We were stunned. homework again! Yes, it was the "Program A+ Untuk Sejarah", where we were targeted to score distinction in the much feared subject. Worse, the worksheet were discussed-after MONTHS! He even spoke as fast as a maglev train during discussion sessions. Some failed to keep the paper well and faced the music.

“SABARLAH, ADA LAGI!!!"

#Sharon, stop crapping and talking about your Grandmother's Stories! /.\

Okay then. I will not type nonsense for nothing. It takes time you know. I will NOT TYPE IN ABBREVIATIONS UNLESS IT IS OFFICIAL.

I shared my experience here to tell you busy students out there: You are not alone. Who loves rushing for assignments? Rushing for blogging or Facebook or games, maybe you will not mind. (Me too! XP )

You hurry your homework, but please, in this case, NEVER EVER copy straight out from the textbook. Since it is impossible for you to memorise the whole big picture and just stamp them out (unless if you have superb memory power), you may jot down the points from the textbook, but be sure to include the page number beside the question in RED.

After all your work are done, be sure to read them again. Do not forget your supplementary practices in the other revision books as well.

Do invest in revision books, colourful pens and highlighters. They will help you a lot in notes and practises, besides heighten your passion in your revision.

Most importantly, never try to read all your facts just like that! In Malay, we call it as "hafal". It will make you lose enthusiasm in the subject and find it monotonous instead. Remembering the keywords are more than just sufficient.

Before I forget, these tips are not just for History; they are for all reading subjects.

And if you don't get what I mean, reading subjects are those which need LOTS of memorising such as History and Biology. :D

Hope you will find them useful!

Time To Study and I Feel Like... HOW?! (Part 10)

Sorry for the late update! I was rushing for my essay for the past week, and I have posted it yesterday! Hope you guys don't trash me yeah.

If you have read my previous post carefully, word-by-word and comprehend it well enough, you will discover that homework is not a bane after all! As for today, I'll be sharing with you guys about some tricks into rereading your texts-without falling asleep midway!

Is revision stressful? Yes, if you allow it to be. No, if you know the right way to tackle your study woes.

Just do it the way as you would normally study in school. Get the notes right and just read through them. As said by Richard Carlson: "Stress is nothing more than a socially acceptable form of mental illness". You don't want to get locked up in an asylum, stare blankly at the walls and got 24-hour surveillance by the personnel right?

For every single subject, I will explain to you guys the exact way to do it...
(DISCLAIMER: I share ONLY about the subjects that I took during my upper secondary. Those from lower secondary, please make your requests yeah. )

Language subjects (in general):

Read more newspapers and magazines. This won't be repeated many times if it does not work. Besides from boosting your language skills, it will increase your knowledge as well. Since it is not possible for you to allow the newspapers accumulate throughout the years (Mind you, your house will have the odour of Ink! That's gruesome!), cut out useful articles and paste them into old, unused exercise books. Be sure to read them often!

Don't use the telly just for your soap dramas or variety shows. Why not watch the news for a change and hunt for headlines and statistics? They will help you a lot, especially in writing factual essays. Statistics will help make your points in your essay more convincing.

For literature, read them often. Stop telling yourself that literature can bore you to death! Mind you, they are much easier to master compared to the actual literature texts available. (By the way, I do not take any subjects on Literature in particular; 11 subjects are more than enough to drive me up the wall!) Make your effort to understand the texts thoroughly and savour the exquisiteness in it. Reference books are just a guidance; don't rely on them completely.

Imagine the examiner's face when heaps of papers with exactly the same answers dished in front of him...

You get what I mean, right?

Stay tuned for tips for the other subjects! I'm going out soon. :)

And please, do stop at my blog and vote for it-EVERYDAY!!!

Time To Study and I Feel Like... HOW?(Part 9)

Previously, I have shared with you guys on my opinions and little guides on excelling with tuition classes. However, I must stress that TUITION IS JUST SUPPLEMENTARY and there is no reason for you to attend tuition classes for every single subjects. Too much tuition will only render you drained of energy and too exhausted for anything else, right? Thus, I recommend you guys to attend tuition ONLY for subjects that you are below par in. Otherwise, your endless tuition class marathon will backfire, while your parents' hard-earned money, your energy and time will sum up for NIL.

Tuition may be considered as a good option, but please, attend tuition classes IN MODERATION! In fact, tuition without revision will not help at all! Let me share some tips on revision with you guys now!

It is always better if you finish up your homework prior to revision. Emotional factor, I guess. :P

However, homework should NEVER EVER be viewed as a burden; instead, it is yet another blessing in disguise-it is another form of revision and reinforcement unknown to many! Thanks to the Mathematics trivia which take centuries to complete, the endless flow of essays and stories to write Ala Shakespeare, Notes by the pages and books, and these are actually those that actually spur you to put in more effort into your academics! Let's imagine the days without even a single page of homework. Isn't it fun as you are free for your daily dose of Internet, Movies or hanging-out with your buddies till night?

YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY WRONG!

Yes, who does not look forward to the days without homework and only liberty? Alas, it will only get you lazier and lazier. Hats off to you if you dare to guarantee chewing your books without any single assignment to be done. (Such people DO exist; they are rare. Not me of course.)

How to complete homework with only joy and not pressure?

Be optimistic while completing your homework and assignments. Why not just accept it as a part and parcel of a student's life? Life as a student is just a small little sequel in the horrendous and long-winded path of life, and as you enter the job market, there are more "assignments" to be done! (Based on my relatives' experience of course. I did no other jobs besides being a Cooperative Assistant in my school till last year.)

It is always ideal to wrap up your homework in school. Isn't it a contradiction to my points above? Well, wrapping up your homework in school will keep those homework marathons and nightmares at bay! You will have a sense of accomplishment if you succeed in doing so, which will lift up your spirits to pack more revision into your schedule.

The easiest homework should come first, and make no delays on finishing them. Otherwise, besides from having the enthusiasm and momentum in conquering your mountain of projects and assignments, your homework will accumulate over the days, and you will find yourself squealing and whining for help!

Should there is too much of homework (5 books and above with an average of ten pages), please finish up the homework which are due next day. The reason is pretty obvious, right?

For creative homework, such as essays and PowerPoint presentations, I suggest you guys to carry out through research and reference to improve your knowledge and expand your horizons. Never misuse this opportunity to do nonsense though.

I advocate the habit of organizing the notes, reference and statistics that you've attained elsewhere into booklets. As long as the booklets are easily referred to and be read, they are good enough. Thus, all needed is a stapler to bind your notes altogether. Since you are to use the notes repeatedly, you will save down a massive amount of time on researching! Well, making references takes a lot of time, and I took more than two hours simply to obtain information about everything on Facebook!

I'll discuss only about homework for now as I have maany tips yert to get shared up in my sleeves! See you later! Stay tuned at SHARON'S SCRAPBOOK and LIVE, LOVE, LIFE for a peek into my life~

Time To Study and I Feel Like... HOW?(Part 8)

Here's a fact: Studying without recapping will sum up to nothing. NOTHING AT ALL!

So, you have put in your utmost effort preparing for those hectic lessons in school. (Lest the teacher skips it! Yes, it is common when you are in the upper secondary. I have experienced it many times, especially in Biology and Additional Mathematics! Yurghs! )Then you have devoted your heart, soul and mental ability into those long lessons in class. Now that the school lessons are over, but learning is yet to stop for you. (In fact, learning NEVER stops until you stop breathing. :P)

Now at home, you might be drawn towards procrastination thanks to the comfortable and relaxing environment at home. You simply can't wait to laze at the couch and watch your favourite dramas. Your Internet Addiction Syndrome is back, beckoning you to turn on the computer or notebook and enjoy your games or rant via your blogs. You might be too tired that you need a sound slumber. As lazy as it sounds, these are actually the norm among students nowadays, especially towards those who are born after the 90's. (Obviously I am one; I am born in 1994 and will be celebrating my 18th birthday this year!)

Before you slump onto the couch or bed, think of your to-do-list. I'm sure that you won't feel peaceful afterwards! *Troll face*

Think of your homework. Think of your tuition classes that you have to head straight to in merely an hour after school. Most importantly, RECAP EVERYTHING YOU HAVE LEARNT! Otherwise, you would have returned those information to your teacher and you'll get nothing.

Then you will find that there is no time to dawdle at all!!!

I advise you guys to finish your homework in school, as mentioned in Part 7. However, in case if you fail to finish your homework due to meetings or long lectures or whatsoever, put your homework as your number 1 priority. Hurry up as soon as you reached home. For those who have to make time to tuition classes in a hurry, sneak in one homework or two into your bag. I mean, the easiest and lightest homework for the day, since you can't afford to take tuition time for granted by doing your schoolwork there all the time!

Ah, before I forget, let me share some of my experience in tuition classes. Being an insensitive busybody who tends to poke her nose into anything around, I relish watching the attitude and actions of every single student in tuition centres. (Naughty, naughty!) Some did their "business" full-time there and hide their schoolwork  or mags when the tutor gave them a stern eye; some took tuition time as snack time; those who are rambunctious and talkative tend to chitter-chatter non-stop during lessons, which are particular irritating! Worse, there are some who doze away in tuition classes! As I had said earlier, I am NOT AND NEVER perfect. I am from the worst fourth group. How do I counter this problem? stay tuned! I will not reveal that fast in this post. :P

Being in tuition is not about paying a handsome sum of money, listen to the tutor and meet up with friends. Rather, tuition should supplement the lessons taught in school. I quote this from my Chinese language tutor:

"Lessons in school are like good food, tuition classes are supplements to a student's academic."

Thus, utilise your time in tuition by shooting up questions whenever you do not understand a topic, just as what you did in school. Listen attentively to the tutor; it does not mean that you can take your tutor for granted simply because you pay for his/ her services. Do your tuition assignments properly and meticulously. Remember, tuition classes are meant for reinforcement, and I strongly believe that no parent would want his/her hard-earned money to go down the drain.

It is alright to make new friends in tuition, but that is certainly NOT the main priority in  tuition! The main priority in tuition yet, is to reinforce your studies.

Hence, when you have that time to do revision at home, do read your tuition notes again and again! :)

I am talking only about tuition classes for now! If I am to include the entire after-school stuff, my post will be freaking long. Stay tuned!!

Time To Study and I Feel Like... HOW?(Part 7)

Part 7-And wait for the school bell to ring!

Okay, I won't babble so much anymore as usual. (DIARY BLOG: Sharon ah, you've neglected me....!!! I'm two and half years old and I don't want to be lonely!!!)

Finish this post and I'll update my diary which is now filled with cobwebs. :P

(Ain't you babbling now?)

#5: Avoid Distractions

Facebook! Who hates it?

Actually, we have two Facebook accounts! One in Cyberspace, the other is in real life. In fact, we are Facebooking all the time! If you don't get what I mean, watch this!

Messages, pokes, chat, wall posts... Who can live without these? If you can, I will say that you are a Zombie. :P

Perfect way to keep in touch and stay in contact with the world beyond yourself, right? NOT if there is a teacher lecturing in class. Otherwise, you are just as obedient as a mule.

Worse, you will expect these: (My personal experience actually)

Stand out in the sun!(Free sauna)

Pull your ears!

(Your exercise book got thrown out of class and you are punished to sit outside the class)

Run three rounds in the field! (Exercise...)

Demerit!

What else? Poor me.

Here, it is not about the irritating punishments which made us literally wanting to kill the teacher. Not even a bit. Rather, it is about the don't in class which can leave an impact on yours and your peers' study progress. "Facebooking" in class will only distract yourself and your peers, and will interfere with the otherwise peaceful and conducive atmosphere in class.

Yes, you can talk in class-only when you are asked to. These are restricted to discussions on related topics only. By avoiding interruptions in class, not only that you can pay more attention to the lessons conducted, you can also finish up your homework faster in class! Less homework means more time for revision and better results. You want that, right?

Uh, oh, before I forget, TIME YOUR HOMEWORK IN CLASS! If you are quick and focused enough, you might finish an 80-page English practise booklet in merely 20 minutes! You don't say!

#6: Respect Your Teachers

Respect your teachers in every way and do not backbite them. Do not rebel them whenever possible. If you pay respect to them, their teachings will be blessings for your studies. Otherwise, the learning process will go down the drain.

Most importantly, DON'T HATE YOUR TEACHERS! DON'T DESPISE THEM. Live and let live. If you despise them, you will eventually lose interest in that particular subject. You'd know what's next.
