My Fears and Expectations of Studying Form 6 at Saint George's Institution

Finally, I decided to sit down and settle on sharing essays-after a couple of months! (Well, it was totally AGAINST my initiation of starting this blog. It should have been an essay blog but it somehow turned into a blog featuring freebies. Sigh!)

I wish to feature a Chinese essay, however business kept me from doing so. Homework, studies and all... So here it is, my first essay in Form 6. I am glad that I have not lose touch in writing! (Thanks to Blogging)

#Not good enough to write a novel though. :S

#I apologize sincerely for my below-par English standard.

Photobucket

Part 1

"Ra-ta-ta-tat" the keyboard hummed in an inaudible tune. My fingers were dancing gracefully across the keyboard. There went my Identification card number.

My eyes were glued towards the blaring fourteen-inch computer screen, waiting for a reply. My heart was literally at my throat then. Matriculation? Form Six?

Mr Slow finally gave a reply which literally made the sky crashed onto me.

"Tahniah! Anda layak ke Tingkatan enam bawah, Aliran Sains."
(Congratulations! You are eligible to Lower Six in Science Stream!)

By then, my eyes, now red with all those micro blood vessels, yet still refusing to give up, scanned downwards the computer screen. My school!

Written in block letters were these: "SMK ST GEORGE, TAIPING".

I simply could not believe my eyes. It should not be me! It should not be me!

The reality: Yes, it was me, being selected into an all-boys' school to pursue Form Six.

Time To Study and I Feel Like... HOW?(Part 9)

Previously, I have shared with you guys on my opinions and little guides on excelling with tuition classes. However, I must stress that TUITION IS JUST SUPPLEMENTARY and there is no reason for you to attend tuition classes for every single subjects. Too much tuition will only render you drained of energy and too exhausted for anything else, right? Thus, I recommend you guys to attend tuition ONLY for subjects that you are below par in. Otherwise, your endless tuition class marathon will backfire, while your parents' hard-earned money, your energy and time will sum up for NIL.

Tuition may be considered as a good option, but please, attend tuition classes IN MODERATION! In fact, tuition without revision will not help at all! Let me share some tips on revision with you guys now!

It is always better if you finish up your homework prior to revision. Emotional factor, I guess. :P

However, homework should NEVER EVER be viewed as a burden; instead, it is yet another blessing in disguise-it is another form of revision and reinforcement unknown to many! Thanks to the Mathematics trivia which take centuries to complete, the endless flow of essays and stories to write Ala Shakespeare, Notes by the pages and books, and these are actually those that actually spur you to put in more effort into your academics! Let's imagine the days without even a single page of homework. Isn't it fun as you are free for your daily dose of Internet, Movies or hanging-out with your buddies till night?

YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY WRONG!

Yes, who does not look forward to the days without homework and only liberty? Alas, it will only get you lazier and lazier. Hats off to you if you dare to guarantee chewing your books without any single assignment to be done. (Such people DO exist; they are rare. Not me of course.)

How to complete homework with only joy and not pressure?

Be optimistic while completing your homework and assignments. Why not just accept it as a part and parcel of a student's life? Life as a student is just a small little sequel in the horrendous and long-winded path of life, and as you enter the job market, there are more "assignments" to be done! (Based on my relatives' experience of course. I did no other jobs besides being a Cooperative Assistant in my school till last year.)

It is always ideal to wrap up your homework in school. Isn't it a contradiction to my points above? Well, wrapping up your homework in school will keep those homework marathons and nightmares at bay! You will have a sense of accomplishment if you succeed in doing so, which will lift up your spirits to pack more revision into your schedule.

The easiest homework should come first, and make no delays on finishing them. Otherwise, besides from having the enthusiasm and momentum in conquering your mountain of projects and assignments, your homework will accumulate over the days, and you will find yourself squealing and whining for help!

Should there is too much of homework (5 books and above with an average of ten pages), please finish up the homework which are due next day. The reason is pretty obvious, right?

For creative homework, such as essays and PowerPoint presentations, I suggest you guys to carry out through research and reference to improve your knowledge and expand your horizons. Never misuse this opportunity to do nonsense though.

I advocate the habit of organizing the notes, reference and statistics that you've attained elsewhere into booklets. As long as the booklets are easily referred to and be read, they are good enough. Thus, all needed is a stapler to bind your notes altogether. Since you are to use the notes repeatedly, you will save down a massive amount of time on researching! Well, making references takes a lot of time, and I took more than two hours simply to obtain information about everything on Facebook!

I'll discuss only about homework for now as I have maany tips yert to get shared up in my sleeves! See you later! Stay tuned at SHARON'S SCRAPBOOK and LIVE, LOVE, LIFE for a peek into my life~

Time To Study and I feel like... HOW? (Part 6)

Uh, oh, seems like I have broken my rules to share my study tips once in two days! It has been four days since my last post on study tips. The culprit: BAD WEATHER. (Eh stop giving stupid excuses okay, Ah Moi? You always overslept!)

Ha ha ha.

Time to get back to the point! (This is the sequel to Part 5-The "Etiquettes" in School. )

#4: Group Discussion

There is no excuse for you to be a hermit and hide in a corner and chew into your books all alone. Neither should you carry the knowledge to your grave. (Choi! Now is Cheng Beng Festival, okay?)Worse, being a loner.

Rather, why not bond well with your comrades? (Well, I do not mean I have dozens of friends; My friends ain't many) As the saying goes, "A friend in need is a friend indeed". By discussing in small groups of four or five, (the actual number of members is up to you, but I recommend not less than two and not more than ten) you can exchange ideas and reduce boredom in class.

Those who are better in a particular subject can teach their fellow group members. Thus, when this happens in ALL subjects, everyone can learn the methods to improve their comprehension in every subjects, thus enhancing their academic performance at the same. Best of all, more communication means stronger friendship. You can either hold discussions during the recess time, after school, at your friends home or via social networking sites (by setting up your own closed groups)-it's up to you!

Apart from discussing subjects, all of you can even go to your teacher as a group should you have any problems in a particular topic. Your teacher will be happier if you ask him/her questions in groups rather than as solos. Mind you, answering students' questions one-by-one is time-consuming, and you don't want to face a red-faced teacher chasing you away for disturbing him, do you?

*Well, teachers today are not just teachers; they have to double up as secretaries or typewriters as well! Some may even have to be part-time sport coaches or dance instructors or anything possible to them. Being a teacher is, by no means easy!

Next time, complain no more when your teacher assigns you group work no matter how tedious they may be! It will do you great!

Coming Up: Part 7 (Still in School)

Time to Study and I Feel Like... HOW? (Part 2)

Think positively, live worthily. (Ha ha, Live Worthily is the tagline of my secondary school, for your information)

Live your live vibrantly and to the fullest! Oh yes, I am going to watch television and Facebook all day long! These are what I live for. They make me happy!

Oh-oh, wait, there's a catch. "Celebrating" life in such an unruly way will not do you any good. Don't get me mistaken; what I am trying to convey is that embracing your life is all about peppering your life with all things enthralling without leaving your priorities aside. Taking control of your own life by doing it as you wish? Gosh, there would be chaos then. THIRD WORLD WAR!!!

Remember, life is a bed of roses with thorns. It may seem appealing and perfect on the outside, but the ocean of life is rough and choppy; it has its ups and downs. YOU have to brave the ocean by yourself; the people around are you are the sailors and oars that will only assist you to get through it.

As for me, I often hold on to this old quote: "Failing to plan is planning to fail". I am sure that you have heard this for thousands of times. Thus, you have to realize your priorities and list them at the first place. For instance, for students like you and me, studying is obviously on the top of our list, and education can change our lives. Thus, it is better if you pay LOTS of focus in your academic. It is not a hard task at all (if compared to those "homework" done by the adults. You get it, right?); it is all in a day's work. Racing against time with an overflowing amount of homework, burying your heads in thick reference books, staying back every week for that annoying and tiring extra classes... These are all in a day's work.

So, you might be asking: OKAY, my priority is to STUDY. I have to do nothing but to STUDY, STUDY, STUDY, right?

Gotcha!

You got me WRONG!

Mind you, who looks forward towards kissing your not-at-all-soft exercise books for the entire day? Or gripping your pen until it was almost glued to your fingers, simply for your essays? Who wants to sit in front of the study table at all times? Who does not embrace going to the field and sweat out like a pig-with their besties?

Like, seriously? "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy!"

Thus, be rest assured and relieved that you need not be a study-mania who sits in front of the table 24/7 and does only writing and reading. You can still take pleasure in your hobbies and have light moments of your own. You can still hang out with your friends for "yum-cha" (Tea break), go for movies, sit back for your favourite Korean dramas or even daydream-it's up to you! Do not go overboard, that's all.

My Way. Sharon's Way.

I must admit, I am by NO MEANS the person who arranges her priorities best. In fact, I am quite a daydreamer and always end up losing my train of thought. Fortunately, I know who I am and what my pririties are.

I quit the internet a month prior to the internal examinations (during my last two years in school) and two months prior to SPM. By doing this, I can reduce distractions, since I am passionate about the Internet-and in a die-hard way as well! I simply can't live without it, but somehow I managed to push my life through offline.

I was diagnosed with Severe Acute Internet Addiction syndrome back in 2010 when I was in Form Four, the so-called honeymoon year for many. Well, it was due to games! Social games! Games were part and parcel of my life back then, and I even picked up a fight with my parents just to take care of my virtual pet. (Yes, it was a pet game. Ain't I childish?) For this, too, I was often caught red-handed playing games whilst researching for information online. There were always the same excuses dished out: "It was just for the ads!" or otherwise, "The internet was down!" I spent so much time on the Internet that I ended up being placed seventh during my monthly examinations.

Being announced as the Best student in PMR for 2009 had changed my life drastically indeed. I was being pulled away from my virtual fantasy. Immediately, something rang in my mind.

"Hey Sharon! Look at your accomplishments a year ago. Do you want to ruin your life that way-for a virtual pet? Trust me, you can still shine!"

I was dumbstruck. I was stunned and all of a sudden, I felt like as if I had being pulled out of my wonderland. And turned sober. And soon got something into my otherwise blurred head. I MUST EXCEL IN MY FORM FOUR! (Oh yes, I am another kiasu perfectionist as well. I am EXTREMELY PICKY on everything but food.)

Thus, another drastic decision was made. Quit the game. It was on 3 November 2010. I have never ever accessed to any social games ever since.

Of course, as I had said earlier, do not allow studies to take a toll on your teenage life. Studying under pressure will only add insult to injury. Feel free (and whenever possible, it is always BETTER) to take part in mental and physical-building activities tailored specially for teens, such as competitions, camps, meetings for the society, voluntary jobs and sports. They will not affect your studies, so as long as you allocate a suitable amount of time for these. An entire day of activities without studies does not make sense too!

Hope you guys can have a better picture on making your own priorities and plan them well. You will NEVER regret it.

Coming Up: Time Management.

Time To Study and I feel like... HOW?

Not to be narcissistic, but I wish to share some of my study tips which has helped me to score well in SPM. Okay, not to say that my result is EXTREMELY WELL; well, it is just slightly above average. 9A+ 1A 1A-. Although I had not achieved my target of straight A+'s -.- but still, I am quite satisfied with it, especially for my History, Chinese Language and Accounts.

I will share my tips-in a few posts., since some self-made animations and pictures will be included in order to make my posts more convincing. :P

Okay here it goes...

If you regard that studying is just meant for examination, think again. Studying is meant for knowledge and it is for LIFE. Life is a journey too short for us to waste on complaining and fretting, and thus should be fully utilised to the fullest! It is undeniable that the Malaysian Education System is very rigid, but hey, why not we make the best out of it?

Thus, when asked on Facebook on the secret to my good results, (Yes, I was bombarded with hundreds of comments and messages on Facebook, but why NOT in my blog? Oh my goodness. My blog is lonely!)I hesitated for a moment. Then I made a sharp decision. Why NOT I share it out? Good things are meant to be shared, right? Plus, it is completely illogical to bring ideas and methods to the grave. (I am too young to die, and I will always be young at heart! Age is nothing but a number.)

What's my first tip?

POSITIVE MINDSET.

It does not matter how powerful or effective your strategies in studying may be. Not even the long amount of hours that you have spent in front of the desk. Develop a negative mindset, being pessimistic and be rest assured that your efforts will go down the drain.

As what had I mentioned earlier in this post, life is too short to be complained of. God is fair; He gave us the same gifts. Let's see.

  • A pair of bright eyes? Check.
  • A pair of busybody and sharp ears? check.
  • An unshuttable mouth? Check.
  • A 2-pound brain which is soft and grey, a complex nervous system included? Check.
  • A head? Check. (Who the heck has no head? @@)
  • A pumping heart? Check. (Unless otherwise that you have returned to your ancestors.)

At least He gave us THESE!

Thus, don't ever drown yourself with those oh-so-negative mindsets such as "Oh my God I cannot pass my History" or "Damn I  am destined to not to comprehend the Chinese prose" or things as such, blah, blah, blah. Please sit down for a moment. Yes, I mean, just for a brief moment and put on your thinking cap. If you can allocate brain space to think negatively, why CAN'T you use it to contain better, positive stuff? Why not change them into something more encouraging such as "I can tackle my History! I know it won't be easy but I MUST overcome it anyway!" Well, those precious space can be used for remembering facts too, mind that.(Without the wisdom from the human brain, where will the widely-worshipped computer be?)

A positive mindset will spur you to put in more effort into studying and keep boredom at bay. So think POSITIVELY. Remind yourself about your life goal at all times. Know what do you live for and most importantly, love and treasure your life!

School Series-Schoolgirls (non-Animated)

I am drawing figurines again! This time, I am drawing schoolgirls. (Well, I miss school a lot! Not the homework of course) My figurines are static, since I am yet to find a good, free-of-charge animation software. Can anyone help me? Benetton Movie GIF is defunct, and the others are not free-of-charge. :'(
